FROM THE CONVERSATION / NOLL TILL 100 #106

The next customer may need a different reason to buy.

What took the company to its first SEK 1 million a month may not get it to the next one. Raising the budget does not automatically make the offer relevant to more people.

A young company has grown quickly and stalled at around SEK 1 million in monthly sales. In episode 106, we go through what I would investigate before another attempt to scale: existing buyers, the arguments in the ads, product-level economics and what the team can actually deliver. We leave the company unnamed.

Start with what has changed.

Early growth can make advertising feel fairly easy. The product has something interesting, the site works and the message reaches people already close to buying. When sales flatten, the reflex is often to seek more of the same.

We discuss why that reflex can be expensive. The next group may know less, feel less need or fail to see the difference from alternatives. Communication then needs to do a different job.

Not every plateau has the same cause. Seasonality, demand, the product and the purchase journey need examining. A larger ad budget alone does not explain why more people would choose the product now.

More ads should mean more useful arguments too.

Creative breadth is one of my first recommendations in the conversation. Material should explain the product from more relevant angles, beyond near-identical versions of what is already running.

One person needs to understand the problem. Another compares solutions. A third needs to see the product in use, hear its story or recognise her own situation. That can require different formats and different ways into the explanation.

A carousel, demonstration or founder-led clip has no inherent value simply because the format is new. What does the customer understand afterwards that she did not understand before?

That needs a process too. Who finds the insight, who produces the material, and how do we follow up? Otherwise creative breadth becomes something everyone agrees with and nobody has time to deliver.

Customers can reveal the arguments you have missed.

We spend time discussing calls to existing customers. How did they find the product? What did they compare it with? What almost stopped the purchase? What would they have chosen if this product did not exist?

Those questions can provide more useful information than a general verdict that the product is good. Customers may reveal an objection missing from the communication or a usage problem the company has not discovered.

The call need not become a long interrogation. I describe it as qualitative research: follow what the person tells you and use the limited time to understand.

An insight like that can become a new brief. It can also show that the next improvement belongs in the product, instructions or delivery rather than the ad. That is part of the same work.

Track costs and sales by product.

We also discuss how the team looks at the numbers. If everyone follows the same standard revenue and conversion view, important differences may disappear. Which products receive the traffic? What does it cost? What sales and returns follow?

A product intended to acquire customers and a complementary product may play different roles. Products with different repeat-purchase patterns need not be judged against identical expectations either.

Distinguishing new and returning customers matters too. Otherwise it becomes hard to tell whether we are building new demand or mainly reactivating people who already know the brand.

No report removes the need for interpretation. Two figures moving together does not prove that one caused the other. Use the evidence to ask better questions and choose what to investigate next.

The brand continues after the click.

We describe how education, inspiration and the people behind a product can provide more reasons to care about the company. An email need not always be another sales message. It can help customers use what they have already bought.

We use a training example: if someone bought equipment, which instructions or ideas would make it easier to use? That is more concrete than deciding we need more engagement.

A community similarly needs something people want to gather around. Questions, experiences and the chance to influence things can give the group substance. An empty Facebook group does not become a relationship because it carries the brand’s name.

There is an operational side too. A product that is easy to get started with has different prospects from one the customer leaves in its box. Optimising shipping and packing without examining use can therefore miss part of the picture.

Choose a priority before adding every channel.

We discuss more touchpoints and channels, but Fredrik challenges the idea that a small team should be everywhere. That matters. Time, money and production capacity create limits.

A shared priority list can keep the team moving in the same direction. Which actions matter most this week? What should they achieve, and who does them? Clear expectations make parallel work easier without scattering effort.

Choose the next touchpoint according to the customer you want to reach and what the team can do well. Write down who owns the work, what should be ready this week and what you want to learn.

What does the feature mean in the customer’s life?

Towards the end, the advice is to enter earlier in the customer’s decision. The same product can matter for different reasons and in different situations. The ad message and what follows on the site need to connect.

We also discuss studying other ads and breaking down how they tell their story. Which feature is shown? Which benefit is explained? In what order does the viewer receive information? Understand the structure and apply the learning to your own product.

Take a product feature and write out what it changes in everyday life. Show that in the ad and continue the explanation on the page. It is a specific next attempt when the same message has stopped producing growth.
